Jewelry Soldering FAQ
How does the jewelry soldering process work?
Jewelry soldering is a process that joins two or more pieces of broken jewelry together using heat and a filler metal known as solder. Solder is a material that is heated to a high temperature with a heat source, such as a torch, until it becomes molten.
This molten solder is then applied to the joint of the broken pieces, where it flows and fills the gap. Once cooled, the solder solidifies, creating a strong, durable bond. Our jeweler then finishes the new joined repair seamlessly so your repair is completely undetectable
How long does jewelry soldering take?
The time needed for soldering depends on the complexity of the repair. Simple repairs with clean broken joints can be fixed within 3-5 days, sometimes less. s. More intricate repairs with jagged joints or many pieces can take longer. For a more accurate idea of timelines, it’s best to get in touch with the Takohl team.
Can all types of jewelry be soldered?
We work with gold, silver, and platinum. We are unable to repair plated base metals, stainless steel, tungsten, and all other non-precious metals. If you are not sure what type of metal you have, you are welcome to bring your pieces to Takohl so we can determine what you have and how they can be reapired.
The nature of the break:
When the broken joint is clean, the repair is usually straightforward. A clean break allows for the pieces of jewelry to be easily aligned. With easy alignment, there is a clean joint to which the solder can form a strong bond to restore the piece.
When the breaking joint is complex, the repair can be a bit more challenging. Irregular breaks might not offer enough surface area for the solder to create a secure bond. In this case we may need to add more solid metal to your piece to complete the repair.
In cases where soldering or more lengthly repair wouldn’t be possible, a possible alternative would be to have the piece redesigned with our signature re.gem.er.a.tion services. Transforming a broken but cherished piece of jewelry into a new form that will be loved and cherished for years to come is a great option that will preserve the piece’s sentiments.
The metal type:
The metal of the piece is another factor that can place limits on a piece’s soldering repairability.
Some metals, due to their chemical properties, do not bond well with solder. An example of this is tungsten. Tungsten doesn’t react very well with bonding agents or heat, and as such isn’t a metal that’s a good candidate for repairs with soldering.
The good news here is that most fine jewelry is made from popular metals like gold, silver, or platinum. All of these are great candidates for soldering and work quite well with solder to create strong, lasting bonds.
What types of jewelry can be repaired with soldering?
Soldering can be used to repair all types of jewelry, including rings, earrings, bracelets, pendants, and so forth.
If you have a broken piece and aren’t sure if it can be fixed, bring it into our showroom for a complimentary consultation to see how we can help
Does jewelry soldering leave marks?
As custom jewelers, we have over 35 years of experience in creating and repairing pieces, so we are intimately familiar with a variety of metals and alloys. For each soldering repair job, do our best to match the original metal’s hue with the solder, so marks are typically not present at all.
