Tammy did such an excellent job sourcing the unique yellow diamond we wanted for our engagement ring, as well as designing and building our ring. We were able to view CAD previews of the ring to approve and move at our own pace. We are thrilled with the results! Tammy is the best.

Tammy designed both my engagement and wedding bands. My wedding band was converted from an old ring of my grandfather's. Such a special piece of jewelry! Tammy was great to work with as we navigated what size and type of diamond we wanted for the engagement ring.

Gemstone Replacement FAQ

When it comes to replacing gemstones on a piece of jewelry, it’s important to consider both the visual and physical properties of the replacement stone.

Visual Properties of the Replacement Stone
When choosing a replacement stone for your piece, it’s important that the look of the new stone complements the existing design, metal color, and any other gemstones that might be present.

This is especially true if you’re thinking of replacing your old stone with a stone that’s of a completely different color – for instance, replacing a red ruby with a blue sapphire.

By choosing a stone with a completely different look, we’re looking for colors, hues, and shades that will complement your piece, rather than clash with it.

Furthermore, it’s important to consider that gemstones of the same type also differ in appearance as well. That is to say, replacing a gemstone with another of the same type won’t necessarily create an identical look.

Whether you’re looking to breathe new life into your piece with a completely new gemstone, or are looking to replace the stone with something similar, an experienced eye helps.

At Takohl, we work with gemstones daily, so you can be sure we can help you find the perfect fit to match the vision you have of your piece.

Physical Properties of the Replacement Stone
Since different gemstones have different physical properties, it’s important to keep in mind how you’re going to wear your piece with the replacement stone.

Some gemstones have more durability than others and are therefore suited better for pieces that would experience daily wear and tear.

A great example of durable gemstones are diamonds – diamonds are one of the hardest gemstones and are highly resistant to scratches and chips, making them the ideal choice for engagement rings, which are to be worn daily. In contrast to this, there are other gemstones like Moonstone, which are soft and fragile. With gemstones like these, it’s best to have them on pieces that are to be worn on special occasions, or on pieces that are not subject to much wear and tear – such as earrings or pendants.

Furthermore, some gemstones are sensitive to certain chemicals, temperatures, or light, and may require special care to maintain their quality and appearance. Understanding a gemstone’s properties will help ensure that the replacement stone will be ideally suited for the intended use of the piece.

The time it takes to replace a gemstone on your piece largely depends on what stone you’d like to replace your current one with.

If we have your chosen stone in our studio, replacing your piece’s gemstone can take as little as a few hours. If we have to source your chosen stone, the replacement project will take longer.

To get an accurate idea of both the cost and timeline of replacing a gemstone, it’s best to contact the store for a complimentary consultation.
